Who We Are
The Highlands Program (THP) is an educational, career
and life planning company. Our mission is to help individuals
release their full potential in work and in life.
The Highlands Program has
offices in 60 cities around the country. It was founded in
1990 by Don Hutcheson and Bob McDonald, who researched the
question, How do people find career success? Their research
showed that the people that were the happiest were using their
abilities. When people waste their talents, they have more
frustration and dissatisfaction in their lives. Our goal is
to help people find careers that are fulfillingnot just
consuming.
Our programs are delivered
only by licensed professionals who have been trained and certified
in the entire process ofThe Highlands Program. Our main product
is The Highlands Program Ability Battery and our workshops.
How We are Different
Career Counseling and life planning have been growing
fields since World War 11. In 1952, Donald Super, Phd. demonstrated
that for successful career planning , we must look at many
factors. Career decisions must take into account the following
factors:

- Skills and Experiences
- Values
- Vision and Goals
- Career Developmental Cycle
- Personality Family History

The Highlands Ability Battery
The test is available on a CD which takes between
3 and 3 1/2 hours. It needs to be taken on an IBM or
PC computer. The cost of the CD and feedback is $400.
It is also possible to do a group feedback, if available,
for $300. This includes the purchase of the CD and 2
hour feedback session going over the results of the test and
includes suggestions for careers, schools, or other planning
for one's future plans. A 25 page personalized report
is also included at the website for participants.
Abilities are our permanent
set of talents. They stabilize in the person at about age
14 and virtually the same throughout the person's working
years. The Highlands Program is one test that yields objective
information. Its the basic knowledge a person needs before
making any career decision. It is compared to a CAT- Scan
for ones' body. The Battery measures abilities using timed
worksamples. You will take tests of spatial abilities, design
abilities, reasoning, and music abilities.
Career Seminars:
Seminars are used after a person has taken the test to help
an individual look at all areas of career development. It
will cover information you need to design a life plan or new
career. They are all lead by an experienced leader and include
persons who have all taken the battery. The seminars range
from 3-9 weeks, depending on a person's needs and have from
4-8 participants. They include experiential exercises, and
group interaction. You will leave with a more focused career
vision and an action for achieving your goals. Please call

Work Setting
Generalist: A person
who is a generalist likes to work with and through People.
This person also likes to work towards a common goal and do
many different tasks.
Specialist: In contrast,
a specialist likes to find a particular area ofknowledge,
pursue it, and become an expert. Most specialists see things
from their unique point of view.
Driving Abilities
The driving abilities are
very powerful and influence almost every part of our work
lives. This is true whether the abilities are high or low.
Each one of these abilities asserts itself. To find a satisfactory
job it, it is critical to take these abilities into account.
Here are a few of the driving abilities:
Classification
Classification is the ability
to see relationships between unrelated events, situations
or information. It is an ability that allows you to move from
the specific to the general. It is called inductive or diagnostic
reasoning. People who are high in classification will prefer
to work in a fast paced job environment with many problems
to solve and would be fine in a chaotic situation.
Idea productivity
Idea productivity describes
the rate of flow of ideas. Idea productivity Refers to quantity,
not quality or creativity. A person with high idea productivity
if asked to think of solutions to a problem might come up
with 25 different ideas in the space of 5 minutes. A person
with low idea productivity might come up with two in the same
period of time.
